Lecce (Apulia) - Italy
Until September 05, 2010, it will be possible to admire an exhibition as a tribute to Caravaggio, for the 400 years of his death.
The exhibition, entitled Caravaggio? L'enigma dei due San Francesco, is installed in the Complesso Museale San Francesco della Scarpa and remains open from 10am to 08pm.
Two oil paintings are displayed and they are considered as twins. They are the "San Francesco in meditazione" works, which come from the Galleria Nazionale di Palazzo Barberini and the Chiesa dei Cappuccini di Roma.
Critics and researchers are opposed about the origins of the canvas : some think that both "San Francesco in meditazione" are from Caravaggio; other think that only one is authentic and other think that one was completed by a disciple of Caravaggio.
The exhibition is divided into 3 parts : one about the history of the restoration and the research about the paternity of the work; another presents the canvas and the third is composed by important paintings of its disciples, which are present in Puglia and by other complex works such as "La decapitazione di Sant'Agapito", coming from Palestrina a Roma.
