Tuglie (Apulia) - Italy

In Tuglie, province of Lecce, the traditional appointment of the Caremme will take place until April 3, 2010.

According to the popular tradition, the Caremme are the symbol of the Lent penitence, a kind of purification of the sins and of the carnival.

The Caremma was represented by a puppet, dressed with a black sheet and with a scarf on its head.

The puppet had in its hands a spindle and a stick, with which was spun the wool.

At its feet, there was an orange with 7hen feathers, that represents the 7 weeks of the Lent or the 7 deadly sins.

On the Saint Saturday, the Caremme are burnt in order to exorcise the evil.
